    A simplified analytical solution for thermal response of a one-dimensional, steady state transpiration cooling system in radiative and convective environment

    A simplified analytical method for calculation of thermal response within a transpiration-cooled porous heat shield material in an intense radiative-convective heating environment is presented. The essential assumptions of the radiative and convective transfer processes in the heat shield matrix are the two-temperature approximation and the specified radiative-convective heatings of the front surface. Sample calculations for porous silica with CO2 injection are presented for some typical parameters of mass injection rate, porosity, and material thickness. The effect of these parameters on the cooling system is discussed

    A User Perception Model Concerning Safety and Security of Paratransit Services in Bandung, Indonesia

    Safety and security in public transportation, Angkutan Kota or paratransit included, are among the commonly poor aspects in Indonesia. The objective of this research is to describe user perception of safety and security aspects in paratransit operation and to develop a model to predict and explain user choice in the future when there is an improvement. Users stated that the conditions of safety and security could be categorized as fair to dangerous. Realizing the condition, users still want to use paratransit because they have no other mode and paratransit can easily be found. The main reason for safety problems was the low degree of awareness of the driver in operating the car, while the main reason for security problems was the low degree of law enforcement and limited number of policemen (security officers). Users stated that the most responsible stakeholder in safety and security was the operator (driver and owner) and the police. Each aspect has two models using binomial logistic regression, namely a model with and without experience of accidents or criminal incidents. All models seem quite appropriate ones, as shown by their statistical measurement. Incorporating user experience improved the model fitness and improved the model in describing traveler characteristics

    Characteristics Of Large Diffusion Flames Burning In A Vitiated Atmosphere

    Experiments concerning properties of large diffusion flames burning steadily in a vitiated atmosphere under conditions similar to those which may arise in a room fire are described. The effects of vitiation on the products of combustion and flame lengths, and the extinction limits are described for natural gas and ethylene diffusion flames stabilized on 8.9-, 19- and 50-cm pool-type burners. As vitiation was increased and the flame extinction limit was approached, the flame length increased slightly. Close to the limit, radiation from soot in the flame became imperceptible, leaving only a weakly luminous blue flame. Even with significant reductions in both the flame height and luminosity near the limit conditions, the hydrocarbon fuels were completely oxidized in the flame to water and carbon dioxide and no measurable concentrations of products of incomplete combustion were produced. A. comparison of limiting oxygen concentrations and limiting flame temperatures for these experiments with the results of other investigations shows reasonably good agreement despite widely varying experimental techniques. These results are contrasted with those obtained in the unsteady situation which arises when a large buoyant diffusion flame burns in an enclosed space such that the upper part of the flame is in a strongly vitiated layer composed of a mixture of air and products of combustion, and the lower part in fresh air

    RAD6-RAD18-RAD5-pathway-dependent tolerance to chronic low-dose ultraviolet light

    In nature, organisms are exposed to chronic low- dose ultraviolet light ( CLUV) as opposed to the acute high doses common to laboratory experiments. Analysis of the cellular response to acute high-dose exposure has delineated the importance of direct DNA repair by the nucleotide excision repair pathway(1) and for checkpoint-induced cell cycle arrest in promoting cell survival(2). Here we examine the response of yeast cells to CLUV and identify a key role for the RAD6-RAD18-RAD5 error- free postreplication repair (RAD6 error-free PRR) pathway(3,4) in promoting cell growth and survival. We show that loss of the RAD6 error- free PRR pathway results in DNA-damage-checkpoint- induced G2 arrest in CLUV-exposed cells, whereas wild-type and nucleotide-excision-repair-deficient cells are largely unaffected. Cell cycle arrest in the absence of the RAD6 error- free PRR pathway was not caused by a repair defect or by the accumulation of ultraviolet-induced photoproducts. Notably, we observed increased replication protein A (RPA) and Rad52 - yellow fluorescent protein foci(5) in the CLUV- exposed rad18 Delta cells and demonstrated that Rad52- mediated homologous recombination is required for the viability of the rad18 Delta cells after release from CLUV- induced G2 arrest. These and other data presented suggest that, in response to environmental levels of ultraviolet exposure, the RAD6 error- free PRR pathway promotes replication of damaged templates without the generation of extensive single- stranded DNA regions. Thus, the error- free PRR pathway is specifically important during chronic low- dose ultraviolet exposure to prevent counter- productive DNA checkpoint activation and allow cells to proliferate normally

    Absence of surface mode in a visco-elastic material with surface tension

    The surface waves in the visco-elastic media with the surface tension are studied using the Voigt-Kelvin model of the visco-elasticity. It is shown that the surface mode of oscillation does not exist in the parameter region where the effect of surface tension is larger than that of the elastic stress at the surface unless the viscous stress masks the elastic stress in the bulk. In the region, the surface oscillation is suppressed and the oscillation beneath the surface diffuses after the pulse goes into the bulk.
